Saint Louis

Enterprising pastor Willem Hellemons and father Vincentius (J. Huijbrechts) founded Institute Saint Louis in 1840. With the aim: education and formation of male youth.

It started small. With a few boys in a modest
house in Oudenbosch. It grew into this square with
buildings of Roman allure, dominated by the
Grand Chapel.
Saint Louis was also active in a lot of other places.
Among others in Roosendaal, Rotterdam, Amsterdam,
Nijmegen and from 1862 in the Dutch East Indies, or Indonesia.
The brothers continue in Indonesia as independent
congregation.
The Great Cour is now a quiet courtyard. Once it was a
playground amid classrooms and dormitories of the
boarding school students. There was gauze in front of the windows everywhere. Then they could
football could be played to your heart's content.
Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591) was made by the
brothers chosen as their patron saint. Because on the
posh boarding school much French was spoken, Aloysius became
here Louis, hence the name Saint Louis. He was a scion
From a powerful Spanish-Italian family. But Aloysius
did not choose power and wealth; he put his life in service
of the sick and needy. In the church, he grew to
patron saint of youth and students, among others. A
symbol that was a good fit for the Brothers of Oudenbosch.
Their precepts were based on the religious order
Of the Jesuits.
