Botanical garden Arboretum

Life in schools and boarding schools was more than work and study. Ample space was also made for being outdoors, sports and relaxation in parks and gardens. This created a wealth of greenery in many places in Oudenbosch. And sometimes, of course, that greenery could in turn help in teaching about living nature. Greenery was also plentiful around Saint-Louis.

Oudenbosch attracted visitors from all over the world.
Scholars, their families, students from overseas, religious...
Also because they could easily reach Oudenbosch
by train. These many visitors were a godsend
for the tree growers: they liked to have their merchandise
see. They did this in avenues, flower beds, parks, among others,
cemeteries and convent gardens and at church celebrations.
Thus, the tree growers had a beautiful stage, were given
a world reputation, and did good business everywhere.
The current Arboretum has existed since 1987. It originates
From the amalgamation of the monastic gardens of the friars
of Saint-Louis and Jesuit fathers and their collection of trees
and plants.
This botanical garden consists of a European, American
and Asian plant collection. You will find special
collections of horse chestnuts, snowberry and spice bushes.
The Arboretum has over 2,500 different trees and
plants. The garden is 4 hectares including pond, tea dome
and plant greenhouse. At the entrance you pass the former
bakery of the Jesuit House. This is now the entrance building and
is a national monument designed by Nicolaas Molenaar,
a pupil of architect Pierre Cuypers.
