History
On the site where Klooster Bovendonk now stands was a country house of the friars of the Abbey of Hemiksem near Antwerp as early as 1232. For centuries, these friars ruled the area between Bergen op Zoom and Breda from the "Uithof Bovendonk". Several wars have raged around Bovendonk and the estate has therefore been owned by various owners including Napoleon and William of Orange. Apparently, Napoleon stayed at the estate for some time.
The "white building" is the administrative centre of the friars in the region. After several extensions and renovations, the estate begins to take on its current form with a tithe barn, farms and various outbuildings. In 1853, the Diocese of Breda was founded on the grounds of Bovendonk. The diocese's priesthood school moved into the building, turning Bovendonk into a seminary. Students stream in from all over the southern Netherlands. The school grew and soon the existing building was no longer adequate.
In 1895, renowned architect Pierre Cuypers is commissioned by the diocese to design a new seminary. He does this after having previously built the Rijksmuseum, Vondel Church and the Basilica of Oudenbosch to have built it. The remarkable building Pierre Cuypers erected is today's Bovendonk, but still without the chapel. His building motto "no symmetry but harmony" is reflected in many details, from the friezes above the windows to the floors in the corridors and the colonnades in the courtyard garden.
