Basilica of Saint Agatha and Barbara Oudenbosch

As you approach Oudenbosch, you can already see it, the imposing domes of Oudenbosch Basilica and Boys' Boarding School St. Louis. Once in Oudenbosch, you imagine yourself in Rome. The beautiful Roman-style buildings, the squares, the courtyard of St. Louis, Observatory Tivoli. Together they form the historical heart of Oudenbosch. History of the Basilica of Oudenbosch

Construction of Oudenbosch Basilica began in 1865 and the church was elevated to basilica in 1912. The end of the restoration (1954-1987) actually only marked the completion of this impressive structure. The architects of the basilica are P.J.H. Cuypers and G.J. van Swaay. The architect Cuypers is best known for building the Rijksmuseum. Within the Halderberge municipality, he designed more historical buildings. Hotel and Monastery Bovendonk is an impressive example of this! The building pastor of the Basilica is W. Hellemons. Pastor Hellemons studied in Rome and was a great admirer of Roman architecture. Therefore, he chose St Peter's as an example for a new church to be built in Oudenbosch and the front of the Basilica of St John of Lateran as a model for the façade. Since its completion in 1892, the basilica has a length of 81 metres, width of 55 metres and the highest point is the dome, which is 63 metres. A capacity 16 times smaller than St Peter's in Rome.

Oudenbosch Basilica as a place of interest

The Basilica of Oudenbosch has a special atmosphere; it is anything but an ordinary church. The detailed front modelled on St John of Lateran with its beautiful sculptures, details and high arches invites you to visit. Upon entering, you really see how immense the Basilica is, the high ceilings, marble columns and, of course, the imposing dome combine to make you feel like you haven't walked into an ordinary church. A highlight of Oudenbosch Basilica is also definitely the apse, the semicircular area behind the altar. This beautifully designed elevation in the Basilica with a magnificent stained-glass window has made many a visitor pause. The literal highlight of Oudenbosch Basilica is the dome. It can be entered by a 140-step spiral staircase. Even before you enter the Basilica, you pass a special statue. This statue tells the story of the Dutch Zouaves. A stone's throw from the Basilica you will find the Dutch Zouave Museum, where you will learn more about this extraordinary army of volunteers who travelled to Rome for the pope.
