Oudenbosch Museum of Natural History and Ethnology

As a religious centre, Oudenbosch was well known in the Netherlands. As teachers, the friars of Saint Louis laid the foundation for what is called 'vivid education' in pedagogy. That meant: not just offering theory from textbooks, but letting pupils come face to face with objects from all over the world. This was a progressive form of education.

Many brothers and fathers were scholars and researchers,
And also laid out collections. Birds, and other animals,
stones and minerals, ethnological and archaeological
objects... That's how this special museum was born. And still
always plays an important role for education
in the region.
The museum is located in the former school
'Regina Coeli'. The building shows architectural influences
of eclecticism in which different styles are
combined and is a municipal monument. The
detailing of facades (craftsmanship is
visible in the brickwork), the window frames and roof overhangs
are almost all still intact. The building's location
recalls Oudenbosch's social history as a
education centre.
