For the Pope!

In the late 19th century, Pope Pius IX created an international volunteer army to defend the papal empire. These volunteers were called 'Zouaves'. The enthusiasm was especially strong among the Dutch; some 3,000 men signed up. Older readers probably remember the book Pieter Jong - Lutjebroek's hero, the heroic story of the Zouaves! The Zouave Museum is the only museum that tells the complete story of the Dutch Zouaves. You can see original uniforms, unique paintings, precious banners and many letters, photos, diaries, souvenirs and awards. So you get to know the Zouaves almost personally.

Oudenbosch, rallying point of the Zouaves

Oudenbosch was the meeting point for Dutch Zouaves in the years 1864-1870. Volunteers were inspected, fed and waited here for the train to Brussels and Marseille. The local connection with Rome was further emphasised by organising nationwide relief actions to save the Vatican State from ruin in the years from 1863 to 1870. Forerunner in this was Pastor Willem Hellemons, the building pastor of the Basilica of Oudenbosch. The statue of Pope Pius IX with a dying Zouave at his feet in the square in front of the Basilica still recalls this period. On the back of the pedestal we find the names of the Dutch Zouaves who gave their lives for this cause. In the Zouave Museum, the Zouaves return, almost in the flesh.

For children, there is a special tour followed by a scavenger hunt in the museum.
