Cycling through West Brabant's liberation story

Get on your bike, get carried along historic WWII sites in West Brabant and discover the story of The Timberwolves! From now on, you can experience the rich liberation history of West Brabant via the new Timberwolves cycle route. This 91-kilometre route takes you along two tracks past striking locations that played an important role during the liberation of World War II. The cycle route is the tenth in the Liberation Route Brabant series.

The new cycle route is named after the American 104th Infantry Division, better known as the Timberwolves. This division played an important key role in the liberation of West Brabant in the autumn of 1944 and stood out for its exceptional position within the Canadian command. The unique combination of an American division under Canadian command, their strategically important role in the liberation of West Brabant, and their striking professionalism makes the deployment of the Timberwolves a historically unique event in military history.

The cycle route is therefore more than a recreational ride: it is a tribute to the young American soldiers, about 170 of whom died during the liberation of this region. The words of General Terry Allen, commander of the division, still resonate: "Nothing in hell can stop the Timberwolves." Lieutenant Cecil H. Bolton also showed exceptional bravery during the fighting at Standdaardbuiten in 1944. Badly wounded, he led his unit, eliminated enemy positions and returned under his own power. His heroism inspired his men and helped to break the strong German resistance.
