The "luminous universe" course at Tivoli Observatory

OBSERVATORY TIVOLI RUNS A COURSE FOR EVERYONE ON THE LIGHT-EMITTING UNIVERSE!

The universe and the space around our planet Earth is often in the spotlight in the news, for example by a space probe in orbit around the sun, such as the James Webb Space Telescope.
Results of such observations seem somewhat magical and incomprehensible to many.
That incomprehensible will be tried to make that incomprehensible a bit more understandable during the course Lichtstralend Heelal voor Iedereen, which starts next month at the Volkssterrenwacht Tivoli Observatory in Oudenbosch on three Friday evenings starting March 28, 2025.

It starts with the closest star to us earthlings, the sun. A lot of research is also being done on that star , such as the Parkes satellite orbiting the sun as well as by several space probes in orbit, which monitor particle emissions from the sun.
These emissions create the Northern Lights phenomenon here on Earth or near Antartica for Southern Lights. Every 11 years, there is an average larger emission of particles and in 2023, this has already allowed us to observe Northern Lights 3 times in the Netherlands.

The course then moves on to the other stars, the collection of stars that make up our Galaxy. Our Milky Way galaxy is not alone either; with other galaxies, it is part of the Local Group with against 80 galaxies. Our Milky Way and its neighbour Andromeda Galaxy are the largest. That neighbour in our Galaxy's collection of foreground stars called Andromeda is the best studied of all galaxies.

Besides 28 March, course evenings are on 4 and 11 April. We always start at 20:00.

During the course, there is the opportunity to use one of our telescopes, obviously only in clear weather. Tivoli Observatory volunteers will be present for this.
Cost is 45* Euro per student for 3 course evenings.
