Divine G was unjustly incarcerated in the Sing Sing Correctional Facility (a strict prison) in New York. To make something of his stay there after all, he decides to join a theatre group with other prisoners. When Divine Eye, the tough drug dealer, joins the group as a new participant, they decide to perform their first comedy of their own, based on the prisoners' wishes. It will be a time travel show with pirates, gladiators, Freddy Krueger and even Shakespeare. And Divine Eye also has to play the role of Hamlet, the role Divine G had also wanted to fill.
They noted, that the film tells a true story about resilience, humanity and the power of art, that it was shot on location and that the story is told by a cast of former prisoners: Divine Eye, for example, is played by ex-convict Clarence 'Divine Eye' Maclin.
The film is based on a 2005 Esquire magazine article 'The Sing Sing Follies' by John H. Richardson about a theatre rehabilitation programme at Sing Sing prison.
