Filmtheater Fanfare | The Room Next Door

After last week, another winner at your movie theatre and that of the Venice Golden Lion. A new Pedro Almodóvar film, by the way, is surrounded by great interest anyway. He is therefore the biggest Spanish director at the moment and can easily choose his actors. With Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, he proves that once again.

Ingrid is a successful writer and when she finds out that her old friend Martha is seriously ill, she wants to be there for her. When Martha's health declines sharply, she thinks about how to say goodbye to life and asks Ingrid to support her in doing so. They travel to a beautiful villa outside New York and together they celebrate life while they still can.

"Without the expected sentimentality, a pleasantly calmly told story then unfolds, in which the friends converse thoughtfully about life and death. Resulting in a cleverly acted film that is far less lively and stimulating than we are used to from Almodóvar, but all the more convincing in simple beauty...." (de Filmkrant)

The film is based on the book 'What Matters' by US writer Sigrid Nunez.
