Previously, the Dardenne brothers won a Golden Palm twice for Rosetta in 1999 and for L'enfant (7.68) in 2005. Also for Jeunes mères they were - for the 10^e once - nominated. Five young women, some just teenagers, are fighting for a better life for themselves and their child. Jessica, Perla, Julie, Ariane and Naïma live in a shelter where they receive protection and support from each other in their good intentions.

The cast consists mainly of non-professional actors, with the 'young mothers' in particular giving a remarkable performance
