History of Stampersgat

Stampersgat is a village located in the municipality of Halderberge. It lies between Fijnaart and Oud Gastel. Until 1997, Stampersgat, together with Oud Gastel, formed the municipality of Oud and Nieuw Gastel. The village lies on the river Dintel. On the west side of the village lies the Mark-Vlietkanaal.

Stampersgat is best known as the site of sugar factory 'Dinteloord'. Together with the sugar factories of Roosendaal and Zevenbergen, the sugar factory formed the United Cooperative Sugar Factories (VCS). Later, this cooperative merged into Suiker Unie and Cosun. The history of the sugar industry is described in this story.
