Films from Iran that reach Europe are usually also an indictment of the regime, and that is with My favourite cake no different. Filming had to be done in secret and directors Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeeha were not allowed to attend the premiere at the Berlin Film Festival: the Iranian regime found the film controversial because a woman does not wear the obligatory hijab, because there is alcohol drinking and dancing in the film....

Mahin, 70, wants to make something out of life 30 years after her husband's death, and in a restaurant she speaks to Faramarz, apparently a nice man her age. He turns out to be a taxi driver and, like Mahin, he was bothered by the authorities because he played in a band that performed at weddings. When Mahin invites Faramarz to her flat to bake her favourite cake for him, it becomes an unexpected and unforgettable evening....
