Lecture on Leo XIII

On Sunday 3 November, the Dutch
Zouven Museum gave a lecture by Leo van Balen.
After the death of his predecessor Pius IX - the
"Zouave Pope" - Leo XIII becomes the new pope (1878-1903).
He trained at the papal diplomatic academy for
noble clergy. He is a man of intellectualism
and of modernism. After the arch-conservative and
nationalist Pius so a new wind swept through the Vatican
and the Catholic Church. Nevertheless, Leo is also a deep
faithful pope and came up with many encyclicals that also touched on the lives of the zouaves
affected. Similarly, Rerum Novarum ("Of new things") - an encyclical on capital
and labour at the time of the rise and flowering of socialism. A true "statement"
of pope and church.
The lecture will be held in the upper room of the Dutch Zouave Museum at Markt
31 in Oudenbosch. The lecture starts at 14:00h, doors open from 13:30h. The
entrance fee is €5 and includes visit to the museum after the lecture. Friends of the
museum and museum annual pass holders have free admission.
