Lucia was the first and great love of womaniser Giacomo Casanova. When Casanova has to go on a business trip, the two promise to remain faithful to each other. But when Lucia is struck by smallpox, she closes herself off from the world and no longer dares to face her lover.

After sixteen years, she ventures out, as the mysterious and veiled courtesan Galathée, to meet Casanova again in Amsterdam. Without showing her face scandalised by the smallpox virus, Lucia and Casanova fall for each other again. Love revives, but will Lucia dare make the decision to literally drop her mask?

Arthur Japin's book of the same name is on its 72nd printing and is also a great success in translations in 22 countries. Japin also co-wrote the (English-language) film script himself.
