Much has been heard about the childcare allowance scandal. The Dutch The hunt for Meral Ö reports on an example of the personal suffering inflicted on so many families and is based on a true story.

Turkish-Dutch Meral is on her own in Almere with her two children: the tax authorities are wrongly claiming back a large sum she previously received as childcare allowance. She does everything she can to convince the authorities of the mistake, but her salary is nevertheless seized. Although she tries tearfully to keep the tragedy away from her daughters Pinar and Ayse, this becomes increasingly difficult, not least because a controlling 'social investigator' intrudes further and further into her private life.
